“Ohhh … Alright” Painting of Roy Lichtenstein Sold for $42.6M at Christie’s Auction

A cartoon-style painting of Roy Lichtenstein entitled, “Ohhh … Alright“, has been sold at Christie‘s auction in New York for $42.6m (£26.4m), according to international news on Wednesday, November 11, 2010. The amount of the painting is reportedly a new record for Lichtenstein, and way above Andy Warhol‘s painting entitled, “Big Campbell’s Soup Can With Can Opener (Vegetable)”. Warhol and Lichtenstein are both pop artists.

Lichtenstein‘s record breaking 1964 painting, shows a woman talking on the phone with its title-”Ohhh … Alright” inside a speech bubble. The previous record of Lichtenstein set in 2005 is reported to be at $16.2m (£10m) for the painting entitled, “In the Car fetched“.

Warhol‘s 1962 painting, that features a can opener cutting into a Campbell can, was reportedly sold for $23.9m (£14.8m) at the Christie‘s art sale. The Warhol painting raised less than half of its expected $50m (£31m) amount.

The Christie‘s auction that featured postwar and contemporary arts, reportedly raised a total sale of $272.8m (£169.1m).

The final sale amount of the Lichtenstein and Warhol paintings already includes Christie’s fees.
